Alright, so this isn’t the cover of Rolling Stone, but what it lacks in popular content, it more than makes up for in spirituality. Church Music has a very long, and definitely complicated, history. From medieval Europe to the gospel choirs of the south, music has always been a necessary and vital component of faith and religion. Music, as an art, has long been an intense academic discipline, with multifarious genres. Church Music is one of these genres. As a major, it combines the study of music, including composition and performance, with a particular focus on the music heard and performed in churches throughout the world.
If you’re serious about becoming a Church Music major, you will have to have a strong background in music, including performance. So, as the old saying goes, practice, practice, practice. Since ability with the pipe organ is essential, get your hands on one and start listening to The Doors.
